Digital marketing a great way of organic growth for any business but small and starting businesses can benefit a lot from any traction that they get. Digital marketing tactics like SEO and Social Media Marketing are great to find the right audience for your business. But most businesses do not get results mainly because of the bad strategy
Modern Digital Marketing is all about branding. But, most marketers focus on the methods rather than building the basics of a brand. With a good brand, digital marketing is a waste of your time and resources.
There are several ways you can refine your digital marketing strategy because there are a lot of things to try. Some businesses can get the best results from SEO while others may be benefitted from the modern influencer marketing. Working with hundreds of clients over years, I have found some mistakes that they generally do. I am going to tell you all so that you do not make those mistake and your marketing plan doesn’t backfire.
1. No Clear Goal or Business Objective
Before making clear business goal, it is bad to do anything related to digital marketing. Some marketers think that running Google Ads or publishing articles will somehow magically fix all their marketing problems. But, that is not the case. Before establishing a good marketing plan, you must have a good business objective.

I have seen businesses running ads without a proper funnel. They post on social media randomly without any proper goal or objective. They do not do proper keyword research for writing articles. Some others copy competitors blindly and all these things hurt their SEO and the business as whole. The best way is to optimize for the one channel first and then expand. So, if you are making a plan for SEO, make sure to give you best and then keep moving further.
For example, if you are in an eCommerce business, you should properly research your competitors but your should have a proper idea of the ideal audience for your business before anything else.
2. Expecting Fast Results (In SEO)
Different digital marketing strategies produce different results at different pace. However, if you are trying SEO, it is a game of patience. In contrast to the paid ads, where the results are the quickest, SEO is a long-term game. However, it is surely a very fruitful strategy for your business growth.

Now, with the advent of strategies like GEO in this world of AI, the SEO techniques can be a little more complex and the results can be more effective. So, if you are going for SEO or GEO for that matter, commit for 6 to 12 months with continuous efforts.
3. Poor Understanding of the Audience
Generic messaging is easiest to create. You can easily do this with AI using a simple command. You can post the very basic posts on social media and obviously, you won’t gain any traction. You can keep talking about the features of your products and services but without talking about the problems that you solve, it is mostly a waste of resources.

Most businesses do the mistake of marketing for everyone. Their messaging is business centric with terms like:
- “We offer”
- “We provide”
- “We are the best”
But, customers care about their problems not your features.
It is best to identify one core customer profile that suit your business directly. So, first of all, you should re-write your messaging in a way that it showcase real problem-solving. You can do it like this.
Replace features → outcomes
Replace jargon → customer language
4. Over-Reliance on Paid Ads
Ads are great to find the traffic quickly to your business. It can convert well if you have properly optimize it. But, the issue with ads is when spending stops, growth stops. So, they are good if you can keep on spending and get your profits. Also, the ad prices are not stable. So, rising costs can easily kill your margins. You get no long term visibility.

To solve this issue, the best way is to combine ads with SEO and content. If it suits your business, you can go for social media promotions. Use ads to validate offers, not build dependency. Ads can be great if you can generate leads and capture the right audience for long-term targeting.
5. Weak Website Foundations
Whether you go for SEO or Paid Ads, all the traffic will go to your website. So, it serves as the base of your online appearance. If your website loads slow, confuse visitors, or don’t guide any action, you are not losing because of bad marketing but because of conversion leaks.

Make sure that the homepage has the clarity. It must have a headline explaining value in 5 seconds. In case you have other visual elements to show, they should load fast and should appear on the top. One primary CTA should also be there on the homepage. On the technical side, the website should be responsive, load fast, and have a clear navigation. To build trust, add testimonials and contact information.
Conclusion
Digital marketing is all about leveraging the power of internet to sell your products or services. As a small business, you make a lot of mistakes and learn from them. But, these five mistakes that we discussed above can really hurt your business’s performance and it is best to overcome them from the very start.
